DESCRIPTION:

As a qualified Second Class Engineer the successful candidate will join our Operations team and be responsible for maintenance & repairs as well as the safe, reliable and efficient operation of all major HVAC and mechanical equipment within the Place de Ville complex. The ideal candidate will be capable of working independently and making good decisions. The primary responsibilities of this role include carrying out preventative maintenance in the buildings and the First Class steam plant, and this individual will also be required to regularly replace the shift Second Class Engineers for absences.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Carry out preventative maintenance and repairs to a wide variety of HVAC, mechanical equipment and systems within the buildings, the central steam and chilled water plants. 

  • Operate and maintain a high pressure central steam plant and oversee the Assistant Shift Engineer when applicable. Carry out routine steam plant duties such as the testing of safety devices, testing for sufficient levels of water treatment, etc.

  • Operate and maintain large scale HVAC systems including air handlers, chillers, pumps and emergency generators, all extensively integrated into our building automation system.                 

  • Respond to concerns and take necessary corrective action relating to tenant comfort issues.

  • Address building system operational issues including troubleshooting and ensuring systems are run efficiently. Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in the operation and/or the design of these systems. 

  • Work with other staff, contractors and consulting engineers to ensure that standards are met and operations will not be adversely affected during construction, retrofits or other work at Place de Ville.

  • Must be service driven, professional, and courteous. This position requires a dedicated team player with a keen commitment to providing excellent customer service to other staff, tenants and contractors.

  • Must be able to work well independently or in a team environment. Self motivation and being resourceful are essential to this position to take full responsibility for individual maintenance areas of responsibility.   

  • Proven problem solving and decision making skills in both routine and emergency situations.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (both oral and written) are required. 

  • Must have excellent organizational skills with the ability to arrange projects involving co-workers, multiple trades and/or contractors. 

EXPERIENCE:

 

  • At least two years experience in the operation and maintenance of high pressure steam plants is required.

  • At least two years experience with the operation of automated HVAC systems is also required.

  • Experience with the operation and maintenance of other building systems such as generators, fire alarms, electrical systems would be an asset.

EDUCATION / DESIGNATIONS / LICENSES:

 

  • This position requires a valid Ontario Second Class Operating Engineer certificate.   Consideration will be given to candidates who have a Third Class Operating Engineer Certificate and have passed exams towards a Second Class certificate.

  • The successful candidate must pass and maintain a Government of Canada security clearance.

TECHNICAL SKILLS:

  • Must have the ability to operate automated building HVAC systems and use the automation system to identify and resolve operating problems.

  • Good maintenance skills are required. Skills such as pipefitting, soldering, welding, controls, electrical/electronic troubleshooting, rigging, lubrication and mechanical alignment are all skills that would benefit the successful candidate in this position. Possessing multiple skills would be a definite asset.

  • Must have a general knowledge of typical mechanical, HVAC and electrical work including safe work practices and a proven ability to work together with contractors with the aim of having these types of tasks done efficiently and safely. 

  • Must have general computer proficiency, including the use of Microsoft Excel.

Stationary Engineer and Auxiliary Equipment Operator - 2nd or 3rd Class

6 positions - full-time, term positions (6 months +)

National Capital Region - Ottawa/Gatineau

A Stationary Engineer and Auxiliary Equipment Operator's main duties involve operating automated or computerized control systems, stationary engines and auxiliary equipment for buildings, industrial plants and other work sites.

Start Date: ASAP

The main duties may include:

    Operating automated or computerized control systems, stationary engines and auxiliary equipment such as boilers, turbines, generators, pumps, compressors, pollution control devices and other equipment to provide heat, ventilation, refrigeration, light and power Monitoring and inspecting plant equipment, computer terminals, switches, valves, gauges, alarms, meters and other instruments to measure temperature, pressure and fuel flow, to detect leaks or other equipment malfunctions and to ensure plant equipment is operating at maximum efficiency Analyzing and recording instrument readings and equipment malfunctions Troubleshooting and performing corrective action and minor repairs to prevent equipment or system failure Cleaning and lubricating generators, turbines, pumps and compressors and performing other routine equipment maintenance duties using appropriate lubricants and hand, power and precision tools Maintaining a daily log of operation, maintenance and safety activities Assisting in the development of operation, maintenance and safety procedures
Education:

Current and valid provincial or territorial certification or licensing as a 2nd or 3rd Class Stationary (Operating) Engineer is required. 

Experience: 

  • Minimum of one (1) to three (3) years of relevant experience is required.
  • Posession of a valid second (2nd or 3rd class) Operating Engineer/Stationary Engineer certificate. 
  • Candidates with out of province certification must be recognized by the provincial authorities of the province in which the position reports to. 

Shift work will be required (evening and weekends)
